Students will utilize Chroma Drawing Ink to create a layered landscape collage. The ink has intense color, dries fast, and has an acrylic base, is fade resistant and light fast! Students will use three papers of different textures and weights for the layers of the landscape achieving perspective in the project.
Objectives

Instructions

Explain that the foreground, middle and background pieces will be made from three different kinds of paper as follows: Shizen Design Punjab Watercolor Paper is thick with a bumpy texture, just perfect for the Background. Strathmore 400 Series Hot Press Acrylic Paper, with its smooth surface is great to create gradient plains of color for the middle ground because of its smooth lay down. Canson XL Oil and Acrylic Paper has a linen like texture good for the background of muted color fading into the distance.

Chroma Drawing Ink, in gradient plains of color, will achieve perspective in the study. The ink has intense color and shows up differently depending upon the surface type that it is applied to. It is good for overlays and veils of color too.

The sky section is painted along the top portion of the canvas board before anything else can be positioned on the substrate.

Remind students that they are to create a collage with depth through painted gradient plains of color.

Resources for Landscape examples: The Web, Virtual Tours from Museums, Prints and Poster of famous landscape Artists and their work i.e., Van Gogh, Thomas Cole, Fredrick Church, Claude Lorraine, George Inness, and Grant Wood.

Review the principles of good compositions including the ‘Rule of Thirds’ to establish focal points that lead the viewer’s eye around the landscape. Shape and color add to perspective, as well as line.

Making a value scale will help students be more conscious of using color to create depth. Henri Matisse once said, ‘Collage is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse element at the painter’s command to express his feelings.’

Students should sketch line drawn compositions that show perspective through line and shape.

Once a composition is decided upon, have students use Saral Transfer Paper and thin tracing paper to trace their line drawing directly onto the canvas board panel. Make sure that the three areas of the terrain are clearly defined.

Paint the sky area with Chroma Drawing Ink. Let it dry. The background will cover some of it.

Use Canson XL Oil & Acrylic Paper (9” x 12”) for the background section and trace it from your traced canvas board. DO NOT CUT OFF ANY EXCESS PAPER FROM THE LENGTH OF THIS PIECE.

Use Strathmore 400 Series Paper (9” x 12”) for the middle ground. Trace that shape on to the top of the paper and cut the excess o ff of the top area of the middle ground shape. AGAIN, DO NOT CUT ANY EXCESS PAPER FROM THE LENGTH OF THIS 9” x 12” SHEET OF PAPER.

Lastly, do the same for the foreground shape. Use the Shizen Design Punjab paper for this shape.

Gather all three papers in your hands and stack them together in this order: background, middle and foreground on top. Since you cut the shapes from the tops of the paper, you will end up with three parts of the landscape, in the order and length that they need to be. The length of each piece should be 9” x 12” minus the edge shape of the background, middle and foreground pieces. The length of the papers under each sheet (that don’t show), give the landscape more dimension. DO NOT GLUE ANYTHING YET.

Use Chroma Drawing Ink, palettes, brushes, small test pieces of each of the papers to experiment with color combinations, lettering pens for linear accents and water for brushes. WATER WILL DIMINISH THE INTENSITY OF THE INK. USE WATER ONLY TO CLEAN BRUSHES. Make color mixtures, value scales, tints and shades with the inks.
